Rolling out of New YorkLindsay McRory October 8, 1995
(Editor's Note: Lindsay continues to push south with a couple of his
sailing buddies. Once to Norfolk, Virginia, he will head back to Halifax,
Nova Scotia, by plane to collect his young family and return to Hakuna
Matata to begin the voyage November 1.)
New York City was to our back as Hakuna Matata made tracks for
the Atlantic. The day began with fair skies and light winds but
mid-afternoon the sun disappeared behind low clouds. The wind built. Our
plan was to stay five miles off the Jersey coast until we hit Cape May.
It was a featureless night sailing along a featureless coastline. The
ocean swells were only 5 or 6 feet, but hitting our port quarter. This
made the boat roll over to one side every time a swell passed us. If we
had a little more wind, we would have been able to power through a little
better. Oh well, better than having to start the engine and motor to our
destination. Sleeping was next to impossible; you could see the fatigue in
everyone's eyes.
Last night at this time, most of us stayed on
deck while we charged down Long Island Sound enjoying the sail of a
lifetime. Tonight, watches were changed on the minute. Once off shift all
you could do was bury your head in pillows and rest your eyes until your
arm was tugged, indicating it was time to go on deck again.
